Mathers’ win leads Huntingdon in Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore Drew Mathers earned his first collegiate win and the second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team placed second in the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

A day after tying his best collegiate round with a 2-under-par 70, Mathers shot an even-par 72 in the final round to finish with a 2-under 142. Berry College's Henry Jones was second with a 1-under 143.

This is the third straight season a Huntingdon golfer has earned medalist honors in the tournament. Junior Stephen Shephard won as a freshman in 2016 and Addison Lambeth won as a senior last season.

Huntingdon led by three strokes after Monday's first round but slipped to second with a 301 in the final round. The Hawks finished the tournament with an 18-over 594. Wittenberg won the 16-team tournament with a 14-over 590. Wittenberg shot a 3-over 291 in the final round.

Emory was third at 598, Rhodes was fourth at 608 and the Huntingdon B-Team was fifth at 611.

In addition to Mathers, two other varsity Hawks finished in the top-10. Junior Mark Connelly shot a 1-over 73 in both rounds and tied for sixth with a 2-over 146 and Shephard shot 2-over 74 in each round and tied for 10th with a 4-over 148.

Junior Henry Gee finished with a two-round 158 and senior Jon Colten Stanaland finished with a two-round 164.

Junior Wyatt Adkison and sophomore Alex Aulerich led the Huntingdon B-Team in the final round. Adkison shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday and finished tied for 22nd with an 8-over 152. Aulerich shot an even-par 72 in the final round and tied for 25th with a 9-over 153.

Junior Joaquin Trigueros shot a 5-over 77 in the final round and tied for 20th with a 7-over 151. Freshman Thomas Gerard finished with a two-round 157 and freshman Ben Harris had a two-round 165.

Playing as individuals, senior Wesley Etheredge shot a two-round 160 and junior Sterling Dixon shot a two-round 175.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the Emory Invitational on April 7-8.
