Stanaland leads Hawks in Rd. 2 of NCAA Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shot 9-over-par 297 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday.

The Hawks shaved seven strokes off their first-round total and climbed three spots in the team standings. Entering Thursday's third round at Grandover Resort, the second-ranked Hawks are tied for 15th with a two-round 601.

Guilford College leads the field with a 2-over-par 578 after two rounds. Methodist University and Washington and Lee are tied for second at 5-over 581. Emory is fourth at 6-over 582.

Senior Jon Colten Stanaland led Huntingdon with an even-par 72. Through two rounds, Stanaland is tied for 23rd with a 2-over 146 and is seven strokes out of first.

Junior Mark Connelly is 10 strokes out of first and tied for 47th with a 5-over 149. Connelly shot a 3-over 75 on Wednesday. Junior Stephen Shephard shot a 2-over 74 in the second round. Shephard is 11 strokes off the lead and tied for 56th with a 6-over 150.

Sophomore Drew Mathers shot a 4-over 76 in Round 2 and has a 12-over 156 for the tournament. Sophomore Alex Aulerich shot 79 in the second round and has a 15-over 159 for the tournament.

Otterbein University's Austin Wells leads the tournament with a 5-under 139. Wells shot a 4-under 68 in the second round. Wittenberg's Ryan Mallette and Washington and Lee's Brian Peccie are tied for second at 4-under 140.

Following Wednesday's round, the 42-team field was cut to 18 teams for the final two rounds. Three of the four USA South Athletic Conference teams in the tournament made the cut.

In addition to Huntingdon and Methodist, Greensboro is 12th with a two-round 596.
