Whitton leads third-ranked Hawks on opening day of Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The third-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team shot 7-over-par 583 in the first two rounds of the Gordin Classic on Monday.

The Hawks shot a 1-over 289 in the first round and a 6-over 294 in the second round at Columbus Country Club.

In a 13-team field that features 11 nationally ranked teams, the Hawks are sixth entering Tuesday's final round. Fifth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan leads the field with a 13-under 563 and top-ranked Emory is second with a 1-over 577.

Three golfers are tied for first after Day 1. Washington and Lee's Brian Peccie and Illinois Wesleyan's Rob Wuethrich and Andrew Abel lead the field at 4-under 140.

Huntingdon freshman Carson Whitton is two strokes out of first and tied for eighth with a 2-under 142. In his second varsity tournament with the Hawks, and his third collegiate tournament overall, Whitton shot 1-under 71 in both rounds on Monday. In seven rounds this fall, Whitton has shot 1-under 71 three times, even-par 72 three times and 2-over 74 once.

Three strokes behind Whitton and five strokes out of first, junior Drew Mathers is tied for 18th at 1-over 145. Mathers shot 1-over 73 in the opening round and even-par 72 in the second round.

Senior Stephen Shephard is six strokes out if first and tied for 20th at 2-over 146. Shephard shot an even-par 72 in the opening round and a 2-over 74 in Round 2.

Rounding out the Hawks' top five are senior Henry Gee and sophomore Ben Harris. Gee is tied for 36th with a 7-over 151. Gee shot a 1-over 73 in the first round and a 6-over 78 in the second round. Harris shot 5-over 77 in each round and is tied for 49th with a 10-over 154.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the Gordin Classic on Tuesday.
