Mathers in the lead, Shephard and Hawks in 2nd entering final round of Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Drew Mathers shot his best collegiate round and senior Stephen Shephard turned in his 11th career round in the 60s to lead the second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team on Saturday in the second round of the Jekyll Island Invitational.

With one round to play on Sunday, Mathers leads the tournament with a 7-under-par 137 and Shephard is tied for second with a 6-under 138. As a team, the Hawks are three strokes off the lead and tied for second at 1-under 575.

Huntingdon is one of 14 nationally ranked teams in the field of 30 teams.

Mathers, after shooting his previous collegiate best 69 four times in the past seven rounds, turned in a 4-under 68 on Saturday. Mathers has 13 rounds of par-or-better in 18 rounds this season.

Behind Mathers, Shephard fired his third straight round of 69 and his 10th round of par-or-better this season. North Carolina Wesleyan's Mariano Silvestri is tied for second with Shephard.

After shooting 2-over 290 in Friday's opening round, Huntingdon shot 3-under 285 in the second round. Top-ranked Emory leads the field with a 4-under 572 and third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan is tied for second with Huntingdon at 1-under 575.

Behind Mathers and Shephard, senior Henry Gee and freshman Carson Whitton each shot 2-over 74 in the second round and senior Mark Connelly shot a 4-over 76. Gee and Connelly are both 7-over for the tournament at 151. Whitton is one stroke back at 8-over 152.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Sunday.
