Five Hawks in top-10 after Rd. 1 of Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team set the tone in the first round of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Monday.

Entering Tuesday's final round at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club, four Huntingdon varsity golfers and one B-Team golfer are in the top-10 and within four strokes of first.

As a team, Huntingdon shot 1-over-par 289 in the opening round and leads the 15-team field by seven strokes. Seventh-ranked Guilford and top-ranked Emory are tied for second at 8-over 296, Berry is fourth at 301 and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon is fifth at 304.

The Huntingdon B-Team is sixth at 308, ahead of four nationally ranked teams.

Five Hawks shot 73 or better in the opening round.

Senior Mark Connelly is two strokes off the lead and tied for third with a 1-under 71. Senior Stephen Shephard, who is ranked fourth in Division III, is three stokes out of first and tied for sixth at even-par 72. This was Shephard's 12th round of par-or-better in 20 rounds this season.

Junior Drew Mathers, the third-ranked golfer in Division III, senior Henry Gee and freshman Carson Whitton are each four strokes out of first and tied for ninth at 1-over 73. Whitton's round led the Huntingdon B-Team.

Guilford's James Mishoe, the top-ranked golfer in Division III, turned in Monday's best round with a 3-under 69.

Four other Hawks are within 10 strokes of first. Playing as an individual, junior Alex Aulerich, shot 4-over 76 and is tied for 23rd. Rounding out the Huntingdon varsity results, freshman Cody Argade shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 29th.

For the B-Team, senior Joaquin Trigueros shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 29th and senior Wyatt Adkison shot 6-over 78 and is tied for 35th. Sophomore Ben Harris shot an 8-over 80 and freshman Walker Hinds shot 89.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
