Mathers, Hawks finish strong to win Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's golf team won its third tournament of the season, junior Drew Mathers earned his third collegiate win and three other varsity Hawks and one B-Team Hawk finished within three strokes of first to close out the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

Mathers shot a 3-under-par 69 in the final round and earned medalist honors with a 2-under 142. In Huntingdon's past four tournaments, Mathers has earned two wins and two second-place finishes.

One stroke behind Mathers, senior Henry Gee and freshman Carson Whitton tied for second at 1-under 143. Seniors Stephen Shephard and Mark Connelly finished three strokes out of first and tied for sixth at 1-over 145.

The second-ranked Hawks shot 2-under 286 on Tuesday and won the tournament by eight strokes with a two-round 575. Top-ranked Emory was second with a 7-over 583 and seventh-ranked Guilford was third with a 590.           

Finishing fourth, the Huntingdon B-Team shot an even-par 288 in the final round and 596 for the tournament. The B-Team Hawks finished ahead of five nationally ranked teams, including seven strokes ahead of eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon and 11 strokes ahead of 10th-ranked Washington and Lee.

This was Mathers' second straight win in the Wynlakes Intercollegiate. Mathers earned his first collegiate win at Wynlakes last season.

This is the fourth straight year a Hawk has won at Wynlakes. Shephard won the tournament as a freshman in 2016 and former Hawk Addison Lambeth won in 2017. As a team, Huntingdon has won the event three times in the past four seasons. The Hawks placed second last season. 

In the final round, six Hawks shot 73 or better and all 11 varsity and B-Team golfers shot 77 or better.

Tying for second, Gee and Whitton each shot 2-under 70 in the final round. Shephard shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday and Connelly shot a 2-over 74. Rounding out the varsity scores, freshman Cody Argade shot a 4-over 76 in the final round and a 9-over 153 for the tournament.

Whitton was one of three B-Team Hawks to shoot 73 or better in the final round. Senior Wyatt Adkison shot a 2-under 70 and senior Joaquin Trigueros shot a 1-over 73. Adkison finished six strokes out of first and tied for 12th with a 4-over 148. Trigueros finished the tournament eight strokes out of first and tied for 19th with a 6-over 150.

Playing as an individual, junior Alex Aulerich shot a 3-over 75 in the final round and tied for 24th with a 7-over 151.

Rounding out the B-Team scores, sophomore Ben Harris shot a 5-over 77 in the final round and 157 for the tournament. Freshman Walker Hinds bounced back from a rough first round and shot a 3-over 75 in the final round. Hinds finished with a two-round 164.
