Shephard and Hawks in the lead entering final round of Emory Invitational
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Senior Stephen Shephard and the Huntingdon men's golf team started strong in the first two rounds of the Emory Invitational on Saturday.
The second-ranked Hawks shot 5-over-par 289 in each of the first two rounds and lead the 14-team tournament with a 10-over 578 entering Sunday's final round. Top-ranked Emory is three strokes behind Huntingdon in second with a 13-over 581 and sixth-ranked Guilford is third with a 20-over 588.
Shephard, the fourth-ranked golfer in Division III, leads the field after two rounds with a 2-under 140. Shephard shot an even-par 71 in the first round and a 2-under 69 in the second round.
The 2-under 69 was Shephard's eighth round in the 60s this season. In 23 rounds this season, he has turned in 14 rounds of par-or-better. Shephard holds the Hawks' NCAA-era career record for rounds of par or better with 33.
The remainder of Huntingdon's top-five is within 10 strokes of first. Senior Mark Connelly is four strokes behind Shephard and tied for sixth with a 2-over 144. Connelly shot an even-par 71 in the first round and a 2-over 73 in the second round.
Senior Henry Gee is eight strokes off the lead and tied for 18th with a 6-over 148. After shooting 6-over 77 in the first round, Gee bounced back with an even-par 71 in the second round.
Senior Wyatt Adkison is nine strokes out of first and tied for 23rd with a 7-over 149. Adkison shot a 2-over 73 in Round 1 and a 5-over 76 in Round 2.
Freshman Carson Whitton is 10 strokes off the lead and tied for 29th with an 8-over 150. Whitton shot a 3-over 74 in Round 1 and a 5-over 76 in the second round.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Ben Harris shot a two-round 154 and is tied for 44th. Harris shot a 5-over 76 in the first round and a 7-over 78 in the second round.
