Mathers wins Spirit of America Classic

DECATUR, Ala. – Huntingdon golfer Drew Mathers recently won his second amateur tournament of the summer with a two-stroke win in the Spirit of America Classic.

Mathers shot a 13-under-par 271 at Burningtree Country Club to beat two-time defending tournament champion and University of South Alabama golfer Brooks Rabren.

Mathers was the only non-Division I golfer in the top-five. Rabren placed second with an 11-under 273, University of Alabama golfer Tyler Hitchner was third with an 8-under 276, the University of Tennessee's Bryce Lewis was fourth with a 7-under 277 and Vanderbilt's Michael Shears was fifth with a 6-under 278.

Since the end of his junior season with the Hawks and a third-place finish in the NCAA Division III national tournament in May, Mathers has won two amateur tournaments and placed in the top-10 in a third.

Mathers won the Mobile Metro Amateur with a 25-under 263 and finished 10th in the Dogwood Invitational with a 14-under 274. Mathers was the only non-Division I golfer in the top-10 of the Dogwood Invitational.
