Hawks place second in Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two Huntingdon golfers finished in the top-10 to lead the men's golf team to a second-place finish in the Gordin Classic on Tuesday.

The third-ranked Hawks shot 7-under-par 281 in the final round and finished the three-round tournament with an 18-under 846.­ This is the second straight tournament the Hawks have shot 846, tying for the third best 54-hole total by the program during the NCAA era.

Second-ranked and defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan won the tournament with a 24-under 840. Top-ranked Emory was third at 11-under 853.

The 15-team tournament included the top-eight teams in Division III and a total of 12 nationally ranked teams.

Senior Drew Mathers and sophomore Carson Whitton each finished in the top-10 and four Hawks finished within nine strokes of first-place.

After firing an 8-under 64 and a 4-under 68 in the first two rounds, Mathers closed the tournament with a 3-over 75 and placed second with a 9-under 207. Illinois Wesleyan's Rob Wuethrich won medalist honors with a 10-under 206.

Whitton led the Hawks on Tuesday and turned in his best collegiate round with a 4-under 68. He finished six strokes out of first and tied for 10th with a 4-under 212.

Junior Connor Bruce finished two strokes behind Whitton at 2-under 214 and tied for 16th and junior Owen Burt finished one stroke behind Bruce and tied for 19th with a 1-under 215.

Bruce, in his first season with Huntingdon, shot his best round as a Hawks with a 2-under 70 in the final round. Burt, also in his first season at Huntingdon, turned in his second best round as a Hawk with a 2-under 70.

Sophomore Cody Argade closed the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-over 73 in Monday's second round and Tuesday's third round. Argade finished at 8-over 224 and tied for 48th.
