Huntingdon men’s lacrosse set to debut in Saturday scrimmage

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon freshmen Brandon Sewell and Spencer Nix have been looking forward to Saturday.

As members of Huntingdon's first-year men's lacrosse program, both players want to see how the Hawks match up in competition. After weeks of practice and months of preparation, the Hawks host Auburn University's club team at Samford Stadium on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

"It's exciting for a lot of reasons", said Nix, a goalie from Tualatin, Ore. "We're excited to be able to introduce the sport of lacrosse to this area and we're looking forward to the chance to play. After fall workouts and January practice, we're just glad we're going to be facing someone that isn't wearing a red and white jersey."

Admission for the scrimmage is free. In addition to being able to see the Hawks play for the first time, this will mark the first time Huntingdon has worn its game uniforms in action.

"Fans are going to be able to come out and see the uniforms, see us play for the first time and learn a little more about the program," Huntingdon coach Andrew Carey said. "I think those who come out will enjoy what they see."

Much like their players, Carey and assistant coach Jordan Drumheller are excited to see their team in action against someone different.

"We're definitely ready to play someone else," Carey said. "The guys have been working hard and we've been putting the pieces together. This will be a chance to gauge where we are and what we need to work on. Whatever we do, it's something we can build off of for Feb. 18."

The Hawks officially open the season on Feb. 18, hosting Oglethorpe at 1 p.m.

"The most important thing this weekend is to make sure we're getting ready for Oglethorpe," said Newell, a midfielder from Elkton, Md. "This is the next step for us. Whatever happens, we've got to keep working hard and keep getting ready."
