Hawks’ three-game winning streak snapped by UMass Boston

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team fell behind early on Wednesday and couldn't catch the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

UMass Boston scored twice in the first two minutes, built a five-goal lead in the first half and knocked off the first-year Hawks 12-6. This is the 31st season of competition for the Beacons (1-1).

Despite playing from behind, Huntingdon (4-3) remained within striking distance for much of the game. When UMass Boston jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Huntingdon answered with goals from Michael Brunick and Brandon Sewell to make it a one-goal game early in the second period.

The Beacons pushed their lead to 7-2 late in the first half. Brunick scored late in the second period and Tyler Campbell scored late in the third period to make it a three-goal game, but that was as close as Huntingdon would get in the final 20 minutes.

Gavin Carey and Ryan Rees scored the Hawks' final two goals. Rees also had two assists for the Hawks and Steven Gernatt had one assist. Sewell finished with 11 ground balls and was 11-of-19 on faceoffs.

Goalie Spencer Nix recorded 17 saves.

Huntingdon returns to action on Saturday at Samford Stadium. The Hawks host Millsaps at 2 p.m.
