Huntingdon men’s lacrosse to open home schedule under the lights at Samford Stadium

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team made strides in its first two seasons.

The Hawks won five games in 2012 and were 7-8 last season. More importantly, Huntingdon was competitive in every game during its second season.

After losing five games by 10 goals or more in their first season, four of the Hawks' eight losses last season were by three goals or less.

"We want to continue to build off of our first two seasons," Huntingdon head coach Andrew Carey said. "We're getting better and we need to continue to build. We made a lot of progress last season and we were in a lot of close games. Now, we have to learn to finish."

With a core nucleus of players returning and a promising group of newcomers, Carey said he is pleased with what he has seen in the preseason. Huntingdon defeated UT-Chattanooga's club team 12-2 in a preseason scrimmage.

"We've been working hard since the first week of preseason and we've accomplished a lot," Carey said. "We got a lot out of the scrimmage, but our shooting has to improve. Defensively, we have a lot of competition for playing time, so that's going to be good for us."

The Hawks' third season begins on Saturday at Rhodes with a 2 p.m. game.

"We're opening against a quality team," Carey said. "They have a young team, but they have a lot of talent. It's going to be a good measuring stick to open the season."

Huntingdon opens its home schedule on Wednesday against Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. The game will be the first Huntingdon sporting event played entirely under the new lights at Samford Stadium.

"It's pretty cool, especially since the opponent is Birmingham-Southern," Carey said. "The coaches and players are pumped to be playing our first home game under the lights."
