Huntingdon men’s lacrosse picks up 5th straight win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team built a five-goal lead in the fourth period and knocked off Benedictine University 10-7 on Friday at Vanderbilt University.

The win was the fifth straight for the Hawks (6-3). The winning streak is the longest in the history of the third-year program.

"This was a good win for us," Huntingdon coach Andrew Carey said. "We've been playing well these past five games and it's started with our defense. Our goalie play has been rock solid and the defense has been lights out, allowing 6.2 goals a game during these five wins.

"We still have work to do, but it's been good to see us turn a corner since those first few games. We're playing smarter and making the strides you hope to see."

Huntingdon has held four its last five opponents to seven goals or less.

Brandon Sewell led the Hawks on Friday with four goals, an assist and seven ground balls. Brandon Scheele had two goals, an assist, six ground balls and won 11-of-16 faceoffs. Jakob Works scored two goals, Patrick Messenger had one goal and two assists and Caleb Dixon scored one goal.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez recorded a season-high 23 saves in 60 minutes. The 23 saves were four short of his career-high 27 against Aurora last season.

Huntingdon hosts Greensboro on Saturday at 1 p.m.
