Huntingdon men’s lacrosse sets new mark for wins in a season

ROME, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team knocked off Shorter University 11-10 on Wednesday and set a new program record for wins in a season.

The third-year Hawks won five games in 2012 and seven games last season. With three regular-season games remaining, Huntingdon is 8-5 this season.

This was the third meeting between the two teams and the first win in the series for Huntingdon. Shorter won 21-2 in 2012 and 10-9 in the final game of 2013.

On Wednesday, Huntingdon led for almost the entire game. Huntingdon built a three-goal lead in the first half, briefly fell behind 7-6 early in the third period before taking a two-goal lead in the fourth period.

Tied 9-9 in the fourth, LaDarius Williams helped the Hawks take the lead for good. Williams scored twice in a span of 41 seconds to give Huntingdon an 11-9 lead. Shorter (4-7) cut the lead to one goal with 8:07 to play, but Huntingdon held Shorter scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Williams finished with four goals. Jakob Works and Mike Kasmarik each scored three goals and Brandon Sewell scored one goal. Works and Sewell each had an assist and Sewell also had five ground balls. Brandon Scheele won 9-of-21 faceoffs.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez recorded 10 saves.

Huntingdon hosts Methodist on Saturday at 1 p.m.
