Third-year Hawks clinch first winning season with victory over Methodist

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore Jakob Works broke a pair of program records and the Huntingdon men's lacrosse team clinched its first winning season with an 18-9 win over Methodist on Saturday.

With two games remaining, the third-year Hawks are 9-5.

"We've come a long way in three seasons and these guys have worked hard to make this happen. We have two more games this season and we want to finish strong," Huntingdon head coach Andrew Carey said. "The guys have raised the bar each season and we want to keep raising our expectations as we move forward."

Works scored eight goals on 11 shots to set the single-game mark for goals in a game and pushed his season total to 51 goals. Works and Mike Kasmarik held the previous school record of seven goals in a game. Works set the previous single-season mark of 44 goals in 2013.

A close game into the second half, Huntingdon outscored Methodist 13-4 in the final 30 minutes. Leading 11-8 entering the fourth period, the Hawks scored seven straight goals to take a 10-goal lead and put the game away.

Junior Brandon Sewell added a career-high six goals, had three assists, 10 ground balls and won 5-of-6 faceoffs. LaDarius Williams finished with two goals and an assist, Kasmarik had a goal and an assist and Patrick Messenger had one goal. Brandon Scheele recorded 10 ground balls and won 15-of-22 faceoffs.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez recorded 15 saves and eight goals allowed in a little more than 54 minutes before Sean O'Hara recorded a save and allowed one goal in the final 5:42 of the game.

Huntingdon returns to action on Wednesday against Young Harris.
