Men’s lacrosse picks up second straight win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team used four fourth-quarter goals to defeat Methodist University 13-11 on Saturday.

Jakob Works scored his first of two first-quarter goals five minutes into the game to help give Huntingdon a 4-3 lead heading into the second quarter. LaDarius Williams and Brandon Sewell added first-quarter goals for the Hawks (4-11).

Sewell scored two goals in the second quarter while Works scored his third goal of the half to give the Hawks a 7-5 lead at half.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez recorded three saves and allowed five goals in the first half.

Works and Patrick Rowe each scored a goal in the third quarter but the Hawks' defense allowed Methodist (7-7) to score three goals, including two man-up goals, in the final four minutes of the third to pull the game within one.

Methodist tied the game at 9-9 with 11:36 left in the game. Huntingdon took the lead for good with Works' fifth goal of the game. Works, Sewell and Williams each scored in the final seven minutes to put the game away.

Methodist scored twice in the final 2:10 to pull within two goals. Kristian Smith made three saves in the final fifty seconds to help secure the win.

Smith played the final 30 minutes in goal and recorded nine saves, allowed six goals and had five groundballs.

Works finished with six goals and two assists. Sewell scored four goals, picked up six ground balls and went 8-for-13 on faceoffs. Williams scored twice and Rowe scored once.

Brandon Scheele had one assist and went 5-for-13 on faceoffs. Colton Edwards had one assist. Defensive players Josh Clayton and Glen Troxell combined for nine groundballs and seven caused turnovers. Clayton had five ground balls and four caused turnovers and Troxell had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Huntingdon travels to play Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
