Huntingdon falls to Ferrum in overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team lost to Ferrum College 13-12 in overtime on Wednesday.

Leading 8-2 at halftime, Huntingdon allowed a 9-2 run by Ferrum in the second half to take an 11-10 lead with 7:39 remaining in the game.

Huntingdon (5-4) scored two goals to retake the lead, but a Panther goal with 2:40 left in the fourth tied the game and sent it into overtime. After a Hawks turnover in the beginning of overtime, Ferrum scored 47 seconds into the extra time to win the game.

Ferrum (3-2) scored two early goals to start the game, but Huntingdon answered with eight straight goals to take a comfortable lead. Kendrick Ballard scored Huntingdon's first goal before Mike George added one to tie the game 2-2 heading into the second quarter.

Sam Hitt won the opening faceoff to himself in the second and scored six seconds later to give the Hawks their first lead. Jakob Works scored his first of three goals before George added his second goal with an assist from Jackson Schrampfer.

Karson Hastings scored 38 seconds later to give Huntingdon a 6-2 lead. Ballard scored his second goal before Brandon Scheele closed out the first half scoring for Huntingdon with 2:41 remaining in the half.

Ferrum scored 26 seconds into the third quarter to pull within five but Works answered back with his second goal before Ferrum made its run.

Ferrum scored once before a two-minute non-releasable penalty against the Hawks gave the Panthers a chance to come back. Ferrum scored three goals during the penalty time and added one more before Mac Puller found Works for his final goal of the night.

Ferrum pulled within one after Tyler Fullem scored 33 seconds into the fourth. Ferrum took an 11-10 lead with 7:39 left in the game before goals by Austen Saucier and Puller gave Huntingdon its final lead with 3:23 remaining. Ferrum tied the game with 2:40 remaining, sending the Hawks to their second straight overtime game.

Both teams had 38 shots heading into overtime, but Ferrum's 40th shot was the decider.

Hitt won the battle at the faceoff x, going 15-of-29 and scoring once.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez record eight saves and allowed 13 goals while defensemen Josh Clayton and Chad Ronk each scooped up three ground balls.

Works finished with three goals and one assist. Puller had one goal and two assists while Ballard and George each had two goals.

Hastings, Saucier and Scheele each had one goal. Schrampfer had one assist and Davis Dalton recorded five ground balls.

Huntingdon takes on Randolph College in Virginia on Saturday at 6 p.m.
