Scheele’s hat-trick lifts Huntingdon past Greensboro in OT

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Brandon Scheele scored an overtime goal to give Huntingdon a 12-11 win over rival Greensboro College on Thursday.

Huntingdon entered Thursday's matchup 0-2 in overtime games this season, but Patrick Rowe found Scheele for the winner with 2:18 left in extra time to give the Hawks their sixth win of the season.

Sam Hitt won the opening faceoff in overtime before Huntingdon head coach Andrew Carey called timeout to setup a potential game winning possession.

Greensboro's defense forced a turnover but Fabien Gutierrez saved the ensuing shot by the Pride. Huntingdon held the ball for over a minute before Scheele scored the winner.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, Scheele scored his first of three goals to put the Hawks (6-5) on the board. The Pride answered back with two more goals before Scheele found Rowe to make the score 2-4 heading into the second quarter.

Huntingdon outshot Greensboro 48-29 while seven different Hawks found the back of the net, with four scoring at least twice.

Jackson Schrampfer pulled Huntingdon within one to open the second quarter but Greensboro (1-7) responded with two more goals to take a 6-3 lead. Freshman Mike George closed out the first half with his only goal and pulled Huntingdon within two.

Austen Saucier opened the second half with an unassisted goal before Davis Dalton found Rowe for the equalizer. The Pride answered back but the Hawks scored three goals in the final 1:07 of the quarter to take a 9-7 lead into the fourth.

Hitt dominated the Pride at the faceoff x, winning 18-of-25, picking up 13 ground balls and recording one assist.

The Pride scored the fourth's first two goals to tie the game, but goals by Kendrick Ballard and Schrampfer put the Hawks up by two with 7:23 left before Greensboro scored the final two in regulation to force overtime.

Scheele finished with three goals and one assist while Rowe added two goals and had one assist.  

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez had nine saves and allowed 11 goals. Defenseman Chad Ronk scooped up six ground balls while Josh Clayton had four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Ballard and Schrampfer each had two goals while Saucier and George scored once. This was Schrampfer's first multi-goal game of his career.

Jakob Works finished with one goal and one assist.

Huntingdon hosts Transylvania on Monday at 4 p.m. in Samford Stadium.
