Men’s lacrosse falls to Division II opponent Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team fell to Division II opponent Rockhurst University 18-11 on a cold Thursday night.

In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Huntingdon fell to 7-8 while Rockhurst improved to 6-3 on the season.  

Jakob Works tied the game 9-9 to open the fourth quarter, but Rockhurst outscored the Hawks 9-2 in the final 13:46 of play. Kendrick Ballard pulled the game within one after two Rockhurst goals with 9:52 left.

Jackson Schrampfer responded with a goal following two more Rockhurst goals to make the score 13-11, but the Hawks from Kansas City closed the game with a 5-0 run.  

Works led all scorers with six goals on seven shots-on-goals and had one assist.

Brandon Scheele scored the game's first goal 25 seconds into play with an assist from Works. Rockhurst answered back but Patrick Rowe picked up a ground ball after a Rockhurst turnover and gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead 15 seconds later.

Rockhurst used a four goal run to take a 5-2 lead before Works scored his first goal with 7:05 left in the first. Rockhurst buried two more goals but Works scored with eight seconds left to take a 7-4 score into the second quarter.

Huntingdon scored three goals to tie the game midway through the second but Rockhurst answered back to take an 8-7 lead into halftime.

Both teams scored once in the third quarter before Rockhurst pulled away in the fourth.

Rowe scored two goals and picked up two ground balls while Scheele scored one goal and had one assist. Schrampfer scored once and went 1-for-1 at the faceoff x.

Karson Hastings recorded two assists giving him 22 on the season, and two away from tying Brandon Sewell's record set in 2013. Ballard had one goal.

Defensively, Kristian Smith and Josh Clayton each had three ground balls while Davis Dalton caused three turnovers. Goalie Fabien Gutierrez had two ground balls, five saves and allowed 18 goals.

The Hawks return home on April 2 as they host Methodist University for senior day at 3 p.m.
