Huntingdon can’t find answer for Methodist

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team closed out its home schedule on Saturday with a 15-11 loss to Methodist.

Head coach Andrew Carey honored his second senior class on Saturday afternoon.

After letting in an early goal, the Hawks found their first goal from defenseman Josh Clayton. Clayton scored his first collegiate goal after the Methodist goalie misplayed a bounce off a 60 yard throw. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter.

The Monarchs (7-6) went on a 4-0 run to open the second quarter. Sophomore Patrick Rowe scored a man-up goal to cut the lead to three, but the Hawks allowed a goal 26 seconds later. Freshman Mike George scored off an assist from Jackson Schrampfer to make the score 6-3 heading into halftime.

Sophomore defenseman Chad Ronk scored his first collegiate goal to open the third quarter as the Hawks (7-9) were killing a three-minute non-releasable penalty. Methodist used another 4-0 run to build a 10-4 lead before Jakob Works and Brandon Scheele scored goals in the final minute of the third to cut the lead to four.

Methodist used a 3-0 run to open the fourth quarter before Scheele scored his second of three goals. Both teams traded goals in the final 9:21 of play.

The Hawks were outshot 45-37, went 7-of-28 on faceoffs and fell in the ground ball battle 45-32.

Scheele led Huntingdon with three goals while Works scored twice and had one assist. Rowe finished with two goals and three ground balls.

George and Davis Dalton each had one goal and one assist while Dalton had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Clayton and Ronk each scored once while Kendrick Ballard had one assist.

Schrampfer finished with two assists, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and went 3-of-6 on faceoffs.

Freshman Sam Hitt won four faceoffs and set the record for the most faceoff wins in a season with 194. The record was previously set by Brandon Sewell in 2013.

Fabien Gutierrez recorded 13 saves and three groundballs while allowing 15 goals.

The Hawks travel to Piedmont on Saturday to play their final regular season game at 6 p.m.
