Men’s lacrosse falls to Methodist in SEILC tournament

FERRUM, Va. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team fell to Methodist University 12-6 in Saturday's Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championship semifinal game.

The Hawks (8-10) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, but Methodist (9-8) outscored Huntingdon 11-2 in the final 51:45 to advance to Sunday's championship game. The Monarchs will face Ferrum for the SEILC title at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Methodist scored the game's first goal 48 seconds into the first quarter. Sophomore Kendrick Ballard tied the game two minutes later to setup a four goal run for the Hawks.

Austen Saucier, Jackson Schrampfer and Jakob Works each scored goals to give Huntingdon a 4-1 lead with 6:56 left. The Monarchs quickly answered back and pulled within one with 4:24 left in the first.

Methodist went on to score the next five goals before Brandon Scheele scored with 3:31 left in the third. Methodist scored with 20 seconds left in the third to pull ahead 9-5 heading into the fourth.

After two Methodist goals, Karson Hastings found Davis Dalton for the Hawks final goal of the game. With the assist, Hastings set the Huntingdon single-season record for assists in a season with 25. Brandon Sewell set the record in 2013 with 24 assists.

Fabien Gutierrez recorded 12 saves and allowed 12 goals in the loss.

Josh Clayton scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Works added two assists.
