Men’s lacrosse loses to Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team lost 13-9 to in-state rival Birmingham-Southern on Thursday night.

The Hawks suffer back-to-back losses for the first time this season and fall to 5-6. The Panthers improve to 3-5.

Huntingdon jumped out to an early 3-0 lead during the first quarter to open the game. Jackson Schrampfer started things off for the Hawks with an unassisted goal in the first 1:18 of play.

After a Birmingham-Southern turnover, the Hawks extended their lead with a goal from Austen Saucier. Sam Hitt put the Hawks ahead by three goals after the Panthers committed a faceoff violation, giving Hitt the opportunity to race down the field for the goal with 10:14 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers tightened up on defense and held the Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the opening quarter.

Birmingham-Southern went on to score four goals in the second and third quarters and five goals in the fourth quarter. Huntingdon tallied two goals in each of the remaining quarters.

The Panthers took their first lead of the game with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. Huntingdon pulled within two scores with 3:55 minutes left in the fourth, but Birmingham-Southern scored twice with less than three minutes remaining to put the game away.

Saucier led the Hawks with three points off two goals and one assist. The sophomore also scooped up four ground balls. Schrampfer scored once and had one assist.

Miles Stading, Caleb Bohrer and Zach Barnhill each had one goal for the Hawks. A.J. Harper had a team high six ground balls and scored once.

Long-stick midfielder Dawson Jones had one goal and five ground balls. Hitt finished his day with 12 faceoff wins, four ground balls and one goal.

Matt Murphy finished with 13 saves.

The Hawks host Dallas on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
