Huntingdon wins at Greensboro, earns 10th win of the season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team won its 10th game of the season on Saturday, defeating Greensboro 11-7 to close out its regular season.

The 10 wins mark the second time in program history that the Hawks (10-7) have hit double-digit wins. Huntingdon went 10-6 in 2014.

"I'm really proud my guy's effort and focus all season," head coach Andrew Carey said. "We have a group of mighty men who brought their hard hats and went to work every day. We look forward to taking this momentum into next weekend in what will be an exciting way to end the year."

The Hawks will host the Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championships on April 22-23. Huntingdon, the No. 2 seed, will play Ferrum, the No. 3 seed, on April 22 at 4 p.m. More information will be available throughout the week regarding the SEILC championships.

The Hawks fell behind 1-0 early in the first quarter, but goals by Mac Puller and Kendrick Ballard put Huntingdon in front 2-1 with 6:24 remaining. The Pride (3-13) tied the game less than two minutes later, but an A.J. Harper goal gave Huntingdon a 3-2 lead going into the second quarter.

Greensboro scored 46 seconds into the second, but Miles Stading scored a pair of goals to put the Hawks in front for good. The Pride closed the first half with a goal, but the Hawks led 5-4 at the break.

Sophomore Sam Hitt went 14-of-21 at the faceoff x and collected 10 ground balls. For the season, Hitt has won 216 faceoffs, breaking his own record of 211 faceoff wins in a season set last season.     

After a pair of Greensboro penalties in the opening minute of the second half, Karson Hastings found Ballard to give the Hawks a two-goal lead. Each team traded goals but Harper found the back of the net with 55 seconds left to play to close out the final quarter.

Leading 8-6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Huntingdon outscored the Pride 3-1 in the final quarter to pull away and take the win.

Hastings recorded his second assist after finding Zach Barnhill on the man-up advantage. Mac Puller scored the Hawks' 10th goal before Greensboro score its final goal. Barnhill scored with 3:57 remaining in the game to close out the win.

Ballard and Stading each led Huntingdon with three points apiece. Ballard had three goals while Stading scored a pair of goals and had one assist. Barnhill, Puller and Harper each had two goals.

Goalie Matt Murphy recorded 11 saves. in the win.
