Hawks fall to Ferrum in SEILC semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team lost 11-6 to Ferrum in the Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championship semifinal on Saturday at Samford Stadium.

No. 2 seeded Huntingdon closes its season with a 10-8 record while No. 3 seeded Ferrum improved to 6-11. The Hawks beat Ferrum 9-8 earlier in the season. Ferrum will play top-seeded Methodist University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Samford Stadium.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:07 to play and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Sophomore Kendrick Ballard answered back with a pair of goals to tie the game with 4:18 remaining in the opening quarter, nut Ferrum scored with 1:34 on the clock to pull ahead 3-2 going into the second quarter.

Ferrum quickly pulled ahead 4-2 in the first 19 seconds of the second quarter. Miles Stading and Brandon Scheele each scored for the Hawks as the Panthers led 5-4 at halftime.

Ferrum scored four goals in the third quarter while the Hawks were held scoreless. The Panthers led 9-4 going into the final frame.

The Panthers added an early goal before Ballard scored his final goal with an assist from Karson Hastings. For the season Hastings has 26 assists, setting a new program record for assists in a season which was set by Hastings last season.

A.J. Harper scored with 3:57 remaining to make the score 11-6, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Ballard closes his season with 41 points off 37 goals and 4 assists. Scheele finishes his career with 80 points, ranking fifth in program history while Hastings closes with 85 points, ranking third in program history.

Sam Hitt battled but finished the game with 11 faceoff wins. Matt Murphy recorded 14 saves in the loss.
