Coates delivers for Hawks in double overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Bryce Coates scored with five seconds left in the second overtime to push the Huntingdon men's lacrosse team past Greensboro 5-4 on Saturday.

The goal capped a low-scoring battle between the two USA South Athletic Conference frontrunners. Huntingdon improved to 3-0 in the USA South and Greensboro dropped to 2-1 in the conference.

The Pride set the tone early and took a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter. Huntingdon answered with two goals in an 18-second span in the second quarter. Caleb Bohrer scored the Hawks' first goal with 8:28 to play in the first half and Tyler Keiser tied the game 2-2 with 8:10 left in the opening half.

Huntingdon took its first lead with 3:05 left in the third quarter when Zach Barnhill scored on an assist from Austen Saucier. In the fourth quarter, the two teams combined for three goals in a little more than 90 seconds.

Greensboro tied the game 3-3 before Huntingdon answered with a goal by Seth Howe on an assist from Sam Hitt. The Pride tied the game again with 9:20 to play in regulation.

Defense set the tone for the remainder of the game.

For the game, Huntingdon goalie Matt Murphy recorded 10 saves in 14 shots on goal.

Keiser finished with two caused turnovers and Hitt was 11-for-14 on faceoffs. Mac Puller and Adrian Harper each recorded four ground balls.

Quick Facts: Saturday's win was the third overtime victory for the Hawks this season. Huntingdon beat Hendrix 6-5 in overtime on Feb. 18 and downed Brevard 13-12 in overtime on Feb. 24 … This was the second time in the past three meetings that Huntingdon and Greensboro have gone to overtime. The Hawks downed the Pride 12-11 in overtime at Samford Stadium in 2016.
