Huntingdon will open NCAA Tournament at Rhodes College
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team will face a familiar opponent in its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Hawks will travel to Rhodes College to open the tournament on Wednesday. The time will be announced on Monday.
The Hawks gathered as a team in Drum Theater on Sunday night to watch the Division III selection show.
"It was a pretty big deal to see our name come up on the screen," senior Kendrick Ballard said. "Growing up, I always watched the selection shows and I've always wanted to be a part of something like that. It's a cool feeling to finally be part of it."
This will be the seventh-year Hawks' first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Huntingdon (16-2) earned an automatic bid by winning the inaugural USA South Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
"Seeing our name come on the screen was one of the best feelings I've ever had," Huntingdon junior and USA South Player of the Year Sam Hitt said. "It's awesome to be able to represent the school in the NCAA Tournament."
This is also the first postseason appearance for Rhodes (13-2). The seventh-year Lynx are the Southern Athletic Association champions.
"We're very excited to play against a good program like Rhodes. They are playing at a high level," Huntingdon head coach Andrew Carey said. "We use our performance against them as a measuring stick each year. It was a two-goal game last year and a one-goal game in overtime the year before. We've had a lot of good games with them over the years."
