Men’s lacrosse wins conference opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team opened conference play with a 13-0 win over Averett University on Saturday.

The shutout is the first in program history for the eighth-year Hawks. The Huntingdon defense limited the Cougars to 11 shots for the game and goalies Matt Murphy and Stephen Dan combined for four saves.

Huntingdon (4-4, 1-0 USA South) took a 1-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but only led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks took control with four goals in the second quarter and put the game away with five goals in the third quarter.

Bryce Coates scored five goals and had three ground balls for the Hawks and Zach Barnhill had six assists, seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Barnhill's six assists are tied for the second most in a game by a Hawk and one short of the program record.

Sam Hitt was 16-for-17 on faceoffs, picked up 13 ground balls and scored one goal. Brayden Puckett scored two goals and had three ground balls and Austen Saucier had two goals.

Mac Puller finished with one goal, two assists, eight ground balls and five caused turnovers and Adrian Harper had one goal, one assist and three ground balls. Cole Foster scored one goal and had three caused turnovers and Tyler Keiser had two caused turnovers.

At goalie, Murphy had two saves in 36:37 and Dan recorded two saves and three ground balls in 23:23.
