Short-handed Huntingdon downs Methodist for 10th win of the season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team wasn't at full strength in Sunday's game at Methodist.               

Despite not having six starters for the entire game, the Hawks knocked off the Monarchs 8-5. In a rematch of last season's conference tournament championship game, Huntingdon took a 7-1 lead in the first half and led by at least three goals for the remainder of the game.

The win was Huntingdon's third straight over the Monarchs and the fifth in the eight-game history between the two programs. The win was also the 10th of the season for the Hawks (10-6), tying the 2014 team and the 2017 team for the second most wins in a season in program history.

With one conference game remaining, Huntingdon remains in first in the USA South Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 conference record.

Huntingdon set the tone for the first half with three goals in the first quarter and four goals in the second quarter. Austen Saucier scored the Hawks' first three goals to make it a 3-1 game at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Seth Howe, Zach Barnhill, Carmen Fuentes and Paul Gordon each scored one goal to make it 7-1 at halftime. Howe added the Hawks' final goal early in the third quarter before the Monarchs scored the final three goals of the game.

Saucier finished with three goals and an assist, Howe had two goals and Barnhill had one goal and two assists. Paul Gordon finished with one goal and one assist, Fuentes had one goal and three ground balls and Adrian Harper had one assist.

Sam Hitt won seven faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls, Mike Jones had two caused turnovers and six ground balls and Raymond Edwards had three caused turnovers.

Goalie Matt Murphy recorded eight saves, five goals allowed, three caused turnovers and eight ground balls in 60 minutes.
