Huntingdon men’s soccer picks up first GSAC win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team used a pair of goals to knock off LaGrange on Tuesday and pick up the Hawks' first Great South Athletic Conference win of the season.

Dallas Thomas scored in the 25th minute and Blake Spike scored on a Chris Blight assists midway through the second half for a 2-0 win.

"The first goal was big and we were able to breathe a little easier when we scored the second goal," Huntingdon head coach Kevin Ray said. "LaGrange has a good team and we knew we had to play hard and play well to win. Today wasn't the greatest performance, but our guys are starting to form a bond and it's carrying over in the way we play."

The win gives Huntingdon (3-9-2, 1-1 GSAC) its third win in four games. More importantly, it's a boost in the conference standings.

"This was a very important win for us," Thomas said. "This gives us an opportunity to finish at least third, or maybe higher, in the conference standings. But we have to keep playing hard and keep getting better."

Huntingdon will try to pick up another GSAC victory on Saturday when they Hawks host Piedmont at 3 p.m.

"We know Piedmont is going to be tough," Thomas said. "We're both battling for a better position in the conference standings. It's not going to be easy, but we know if we win out, second place is a realistic possibility for us."

The two teams tied in a non-conference matchup on Oct. 1.

"Both teams know how the other plays," Ray said. "We went over there and we tied 2-2 earlier this year. I think it's going to be the same kind of game this time. Both of us are looking for a win and trying to finish higher than the other in the GSAC standings. We know it's going to be a tough game, but we're excited to have this opportunity in front of us."
