Huntingdon men’s soccer shuts out Tennessee Temple on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon Hawks wanted to send their seniors out with a win in their final home soccer game on Tuesday.

The Hawks scored once in each half to guarantee a 2-0 win over Tennessee Temple on Senior Day.

"We wanted to send our seniors off the right way in their final home game," Huntingdon head coach Kevin Ray said. "This group of seniors bought into what we were trying to do and they've stuck with it. They've been great servants on the field and off and they've been great ambassadors for Huntingdon College. I'm excited to see what's ahead for them in the future."

Senior Rusty Cowley scored on a Chris Blight assist in the opening minutes of the game and Blight added a penalty kick in the second half to secure the victory.

"This was a good win for our final home game," Cowley said. "We're seeing improvement. We want to get a good result this weekend and continue to play well as we go into the conference tournament."

The Hawks travel to Covenant College on Saturday for a 6 p.m. game. The Great South Athletic Conference begins on Nov. 4 in LaGrange, Ga.

Huntingdon (4-10-2) has won four of its last six games, with a 3-1 loss to Maryville and a 2-1 loss to Piedmont as the only losses in that span.

"Compared to earlier in the season, that's a good feeling," Cowley said. "When we were losing close games in the middle of the season, we were starting to hang our heads down a little. But these last six games have been a good morale booster and they've helped us pick our heads back up."

Four wins is not what the Hawks had hoped for at this point in the season, but it is an improvement on last year's 3-14-1 record. The Hawks hope to pick up a few more wins before the season is over.

"It's a small improvement, but it's an improvement," Ray said. "We've been very competitive this year and these guys are much better than our record indicates. We've lost seven games by two goals or less, but we have continued to work. We've picked up some good wins and this was a good win going into our final game of the regular season."
