Williams’ three goals lead Hawks in home opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Rhett Williams scored three goals and four other Hawks scored once to lead the Huntingdon men's soccer team to victory in their home opener on Wednesday.

The 7-0 win over Hiwassee College marked the most goals scored by the Huntingdon men since an 8-goal performance against Atlanta Christian in 2007. During the past three seasons Huntingdon scored three or more goals in a game just four times.

"This was a good win and a step in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go," first-year Huntingdon men's soccer coach Timmy McCormack said. "We were able to get 30 players in the game today and a lot of guys were able to get good experience. Substituting early, we were able to put some guys in some key situations and I think we will grow from that experience. As young as this team is, any experience is good experience.

"Now we have to get ready for Concordia on Saturday. They have a very talented team this year and have battled with a couple of Division II teams already. It's going to be a challenge for us."

The Hawks (2-2) host Concordia at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

In Wednesday's win, the Hawks scored two goals in the first 8:17 of the game and led 4-0 at the half. Williams scored one goal in the first half and two goals early in the second half before joining the other starters on the bench to watch the reserves play out the second half. Williams also had two assists in the game.

"Our midfield play was much better today than in the past couple of games," McCormack said. "The play of our midfield and our ability to keep possession of the ball helped control the game. Our starting midfielders (Chris Blight, Brian Martin and Williams) were clicking today and that allowed Rhett to be creative."

Sophomore Turner Adcock scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Blight at the 5:32 mark of the game. A little less than three minutes later, Blight scored on an assist from Williams. Senior Jack Allen made it 3-0 on a Williams assist late in the first half before Williams scored three times in less than 20 minutes. Brandon Van Meter got the assist on Williams' first goal and Brady McMillan made the assist on Williams' third goal.

McMillan closed out the scoring on an assist from Christian Cabrera.
