Hawks’ Van Emelen earns conference Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon freshman Brendon Van Emelen scored three goals and added an assist in his first collegiate soccer game on Friday.

The performance in the 4-0 win over Warren Wilson helped him earn two conference awards this week. With the release of the USA South's Athletes of the Week on Monday, Van Emelen was named the Men's Soccer Player of the Week and the Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Brendon Van Emelen, Huntingdon
- The freshman forward from Memphis, Tennessee helped the Hawks to a season-opening 4-0 win over Warren Wilson in the team's only contest last week. Van Emelen tallied a hat trick by scoring the first three goals of his career. He also added his first collegiate assist in the victory. Also Nominated: Alex Waddell, Maryville; Garrison Dale, Covenant; Hank Tobener, Methodist; Aaron Gustine, Ferrum.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Shuler Polk, Covenant - The senior goalkeeper from Fountain Inn, South Carolina posted a shutout in a season-opening 4-0 win over Tennessee Temple in the team's only action last week. Polk stopped all three shots he faced to earn the win. Also Nominated: None.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Laura Goodwin, Piedmont - The Snellville, Georgia senior forward tallied two goals and one assist in a 1-1 week for the Lions. In a 2-1 loss at Berry, Goodwin assisted on the team's only goal of the match. In a 5-0 victory over Guilford, Goodwin recorded two goals, including the game-winner. Also Nominated: Sierra Siegel, Maryville; Morgan Funck, Ferrum; Sandra Johansson, Averett.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Kelsey Hopper, Meredith - The Wilmington, North Carolina senior goalkeeper allowed just two goals while stopping 25 shots in 200 minutes played in net last week for the Avenging Angels. In a scoreless, double-overtime, tie at Virginia Wesleyan, Hopper pushed aside each of the 11 shots she faced. In a 2-0 loss to Christopher Newport, Hopper held the Captains scoreless for 74 minutes before allowing the two scores. She made 14 saves in the defeat. Volleyball Player of the Week
Nicole Barringer, Averett - The junior setter from Landis, North Carolina averaged 11.2 assists and 1.7 digs per set last week as the Cougars posted a 4-0 record at their own Cougar Classic. In a 3-1 win over Austin, Barringer recorded 41 assists, six digs, three service aces, two blocks and one kill. In a 3-0 victory over Guilford, Barringer posted 33 assists, seven digs, one service ace, one block and one kill. In a 3-0 win over Roanoke, Barringer contributed 37 assists, five digs, four service aces and one kill. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Barringer totaled 34 assists, five kills and four digs. For her efforts, Barringer was named Most Valuable Player of the event. Also Nominated: Stephanie Kirkpatrick, Covenant; Kali Martin, Huntingdon; Kaitlin Norman, Piedmont; Kelsey Handel, Maryville.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Estes Carlson, Covenant - The senior defensive specialist from Eaton, Colorado averaged 3.9 digs per set last week as the Scots posted a 2-0 record. In a 3-2 win over Oglethorpe, Carlson recorded 23 digs, two service aces, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Wesleyan (Ga.), Carlson totaled eight digs, three kills and one assist. Also Nominated: Katelyn Holley, Averett; Katie Faith, Piedmont.

Mayzie Lewis, Mary Baldwin - The Stuarts Draft, Virginia freshman forward tallied her first career hat trick in a 4-1 season-opening victory over Wilson in the team's only action last week. Lewis scored the team's final three goals of the match. Also Nominated: Savannah Castles, Piedmont.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Katie Chancellor, LaGrange - The freshman outside hitter from Grovetown, Georgia averaged 2.9 kills and 2.9 digs per set last week as the Panthers posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-0 win over Huntingdon, Chancellor posted a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs along with four blocks. In a 3-2 victory over Mississippi College, Chancellor tallied a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs to go along with one service ace and one block. In a 3-0 loss to Birmingham Southern, Chancellor totaled five digs and three kills. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Agnes Scott, Chancellor posted a double-double of 11 digs and ten kills along with one assist and one service ace. Also Nominated: Anna Swain, Covenant; Brittany Daley, Averett; Jackie Campbell, Piedmont; Lexi Gaertner, Maryville.
