Huntingdon men’s soccer closes season with shutout win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Rhett Williams scored two goals and Nick Stinson scored one to lead the Huntingdon men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over LaGrange on Wednesday at Samford Stadium.

It was the fifth shutout of the season and helped the Hawks (4-11-2, 2-7 USA South) end the season on a high note.

"This was a good way to close out the season," first-year Huntingdon head coach Matt Williams said. "We've been through some tough stretches this season, but we've continued to get better. We played LaGrange very early in the season. We tied them 0-0 in overtime the first time we played and today we scored three goals. It was good to end the season with a win and be able to see that improvement.

"It was also great to be able to send our two seniors (Nick Alverson and Brandon Maddox) out with a good win. This being the first time we've played in Samford Stadium, that's a good memory for the seniors and the younger guys. It was a great atmosphere and a lot of fun for the players and the fans."

Huntingdon set the tone early Wednesday, taking nine shots in the first half and a 1-0 lead on a Williams goal and Desmond Ibie assist. Williams added his second goal in the 74th minute of the game and Stinson closed the scoring in the final three minutes.

Colton Savage took a team-high seven shots (four shots on goal), Austin Stacey took four shots (one on goal), Williams took three shots and Zach den Besten (two shots on goal) and Trevor Byrum (one shot on goal) each took two shots. Stinson and Ian Meadows each took one shot on goal and Ibie, Alverson and Brendon Van Emelen each took one shot.

Huntingdon keeper Sebastian Garcia recorded three saves in the shutout.
