Men’s soccer ties Birmingham-Southern in double OT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team took Birmingham-Southern to double overtime on Sunday and came away with a 1-1 tie in the Jim 'N Nicks/PUMA Labor Day Classic.

Zach den Besten scored the Hawks' goal on an assist from Miguel Medina midway through the second half.

After being held to just four shots against Oglethorpe on Friday, the Hawks (0-1-1) took nine shots against Birmingham-Southern, including four shots on goal. In addition to den Besten, Killian Delmore took two shots on goal and Bo Jenkins took one shot on goal.

"We've had two good tests to start the season. We've learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on moving forward," Huntingdon head coach Matt Williams said. "We were in our shell a little during the first game Friday. We played hard and we never gave up, but we didn't play to our potential. We came out with more confidence from the beginning today. But once they scored, we went back into our shell and were more timid than we had been at the start.

"Still, we showed an incredible effort to tie the game and battle through both overtimes. We showed great spirit. We still have a long way to go, but if we can continue to play with this effort and attitude, I think we're only going to get better."

Birmingham-Southern (1-0-1) took 25 shots for the game, 14 of which were shots on goal. Huntingdon keeper Alex Brown recorded 13 saves and one goal allowed in 110 minutes.

Huntingdon travels to Hendrix on Saturday for a noon game.
