Huntingdon edges N.C. Wesleyan in key conference battle

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team picked up its second USA South Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday, defeating North Carolina Wesleyan 2-1.

Dylan Wier scored 13 minutes into the game to give Huntingdon (3-9-3, 2-4-2 USA South) a 1-0 lead. Wier finished with two shots, two shots on goal and one goal.

The Battling Bishops (7-7-1, 5-3-0) scored in the 18th minute to tie the game 1-1.

Miguel Vidal scored the go-ahead goal in the 59th minute with an assist from Brendon Van Emelen and gave the Hawks the 2-1 lead.

The Hawks defense clamped down in the second half and denied all six shots on goal in the half.

"Today was a great team effort," head coach Matt Cooper said. " We played really good defense defense and took our chances well offensively.

"This was a big win for our program and we need to keep this momentum going for these last two games."

Alex Brown recorded 10 saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action.

Vidal finished with two shots, two shots on goal and one goal. Tyler DeJianne and Mac Puller both had one shot and one shot on goal.

The Hawks will battle at second-place USA South opponent Methodist University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
