Hawks lose at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team lost 5-1 on Thursday night to Birmingham-Southern.

The Panthers scored the first goal eight minutes into the game and never looked back. Birmingham-Southern added one more goal in the first-half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Panthers opened the second-half with their third goal of the game in the 49th minute off a penalty kick. Birmingham-Southern scored off another penalty kick a little less than six minutes later to go ahead 4-0.

Birmingham-Southern scored once more before Zach den Besten scored in 89th minute with an assist from Brendon Van Emelen to avoid the shutout.

Den Besten and Van Emelen each record two shots.

The Panthers outshot Huntingdon 31-4 and had 13 shots on goal.  

Senior keeper Eathan Small allowed five goals while making five saves in 75 minutes of play. Freshman Dakota Gruzdas played the final 15 minutes and recorded one save.

The Hawks host Toccoa Falls on Sept. 10 12 p.m. on the Huntingdon soccer field.
