Lady Hawks Defeat Maryville, 2-0, in GSAC Tournament

MACON, Ga. ---- Huntingdon College's softball team held Maryville College to a four hit shut-out, 2-0, in their opening game of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Wesleyan College. Sophomore Melissa McClure picked up her 13th win by striking out six Lady Scots on Friday afternoon's contest.

McClure (13-9) pitched 5 2/3 innings only allowing three hits in the win over Maryville (13-19). Junior Bree Giordana started the game throwing 1 1/3 innings striking out one Lady Scot and giving up one hit.

Huntingdon took the lead in the bottom of the 1st inning following two Lady Hawk hits. Giordana led off the inning with a single before McClure's sacrifice bunt moved Giordana over to second base. Senior Ashley Blocker's bunt sent Giordana over to third base with one out. Junior Aleah Payne's sacrifice fly to left field drove in Giordana for Huntingdon's one run advantage, 1-0.

Payne opened up the Lady Hawks' offense in the bottom of the 6th inning with a single. Payne stole second base before freshman Holly Ostrander's RBI-double advanced Payne across the plate, 2-0.

The Lady Hawks registered five total hits in the victory with Payne (2-for-2) posting a game-high two hits. Ostrander and Payne accounted for each of Huntingdon's RBI's in the GSAC tournament game.

Huntingdon (25-14) will take on fourth-seeded LaGrange College on Saturday, Apr. 30, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Eastern in Macon, Georgia. The winner of the tomorrow's contest between the Lady Hawks and Panthers will advance to the GSAC championship game while the loser will fall into the loser bracket of the double elimination tournament.
