GSAC Sports Information

DECATUR,Ga.- Kicking off the 2012 softball season in stellar fashion, Bree Giordana and Holly Ostrander of Huntingdon earn the first Great South Athletic Conference softball pitcher and player of the week honors. The duo earned this honor last year for their play for the Lady Hawks softball team.

Starting the season 4-1 and currently riding a four game win streak, Giordana was a crucial part of getting her team those wins. During the first week of the season, she was 2-1 with a 0.69 ERA, 13 strikeouts, five walks, 10 hits and one earned run in 13 innings of work.

Giordana pitched 7 1/3 innings in a 3-2 loss to Birmingham-Southern in eight innings, striking out four, walking two, scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run. In a 16-8 win over Centre, the senior pitched 2 2/3 innings for the win, striking out two, walking two and allowing two hits in relief. In Sunday's 5-4 win over Alabama A&M, the Kaukauna, Wisc., native struck out seven, walked one and allowed one hit in three innings of relief to get the win.

Helping Giordanna get those wins was teammate Ostrander who's bat lit up when she was at the plate over the last week. Last week, she batted .889 (8-for-9) in three games with six RBI and three runs and had the game-winning hit in a 5-4 win over Alabama A&M.

The outfielder was 2-for-2 in an eight-inning, 3-2 loss to Birmingham-Southern in the Hawks' season opener. In Game 2, a 16-8 win over Centre, the sophomore was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. The Clearwater, Fla., native closed the weekend with a 3-for-3 performance, three RBIS and a run against A&M. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, with one out and runners on second and third, Ostrander ended the game with a two-run single to right field.

The Lady Hawks hit the field against this weekend in Atlanta, Ga. with a weekend set versus Emory and Transylvania. For more information on the Lady Hawks softball team, visithuntingdonhawks.com.
