Huntingdon's Payne and Piedmont's Head Earn Weekly Softball Awards

 

DECATUR, Ga.- Both earning their first Great South Athletic Conference softball weekly honors, Brittney Head of Piedmont and Aleah Payne of Huntingdon claim this week's Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. This is the first honor for the duo this season.

Three games of work last week on the mound gave her the Pitcher of the Week honor for the week of March 19. In that three game set, she went 17 1/3 innings, three earned runs, 13 hits, four walks and 22 strikeouts for the Lady Lions. Head currently sits in fifth place in the conference with 47 strikeouts on the season in 49 innings.

Helping the Hawks go 3-1 on the week, Payne batted .571 (12-for-21) with a home run, eight RBI, 11 runs and seven stolen bases in six games this week. Payne scored the winning run in an 8-7 win over Spring Hill in 11 innings. Trailing by a run in the seventh inning, she reached base on a bunt and scored from first on an error to force extra innings. She was 3-for-5, with a two-run homer, three RBIs and four runs in the game. Payne is currently second in the conference in hits (21) and runs scored (15).

Piedmont plays host tonight for a conference doubleheader against rival LaGrange. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.Huntingdon gets a week off before heading further into their conference schedule with a road match-up in Atlanta against Spelman March 29 and then two days later, against Wesleyan in Macon, Ga.
