Huntingdon softball splits with Birmingham-Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team came up short in Game 1, but the Lady Hawks earned a split with Birmingham-Southern on Friday.

After giving up a run in the top of the seventh in a 2-1 loss in the first game, Huntingdon responded with a 6-4 win in Game 2. The Lady Hawks (21-10) have won 13 of their last 16 games.

Lauren Welch accounted for five RBIs in the two games, driving in Huntingdon's only run in the first game and four runs in the second game. Welch had a two-run double in the first inning of Game 2 and added a 2-run homer in the fifth inning.

In the second game, Huntingdon took a 4-1 lead in the first inning and pulled ahead 6-3 in the fifth inning. Before Welch's two-run double scored Kristi Taylor and Holly Ostrander in the first inning, Gabby Alcantar and Aleah Payne each scored on Birmingham-Southern errors.

Alcantar, Welch and Payne each finished with two hits and Payne scored twice. Melissa McClure (9-4) picked up the win for the Lady Hawks.

Birmingham-Southern (24-6) took the first game by scoring a run in the second inning and singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Bree Giordana (11-6) took the loss for Huntingdon, despite striking out eight, allowing one earned run and five hits.

The Lady Hawks were limited to just four hits in the game. Payne scored on a fielder's choice by Welch.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Saturday against Maryville in a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
