Huntingdon softball opens conference play with sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Holly Ostrander hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Huntingdon softball team complete a 4-1 and 4-3 sweep of Salem College on Saturday.

Ostrander finished the day with two hits, two RBIs and two runs for Huntingdon (2-6, 2-0 Great South Athletic Conference). Brittany Richardson had four hits, a RBI and two runs and Ashlee Zachmeyer and Kerri Reed each had two RBIs.

Melissa McClure picked up the win in Game 1, striking out nine, scattering three hits and allowing one run in seven innings. Brooke Meadows started Game 2, struck out eight, walked four and allowed six hits and three runs in six innings. Ashley Hawkins picked up the win in relief in the seventh inning.

Huntingdon scored all four runs in the first three innings of Game 1. Reed drove in a run in the first inning and the third inning and Zachmeyer doubled in two runs in the third inning.

In the second game, Richardson scored on an Ostrander sacrifice bunt in the first inning and a Kaetlen Brown single in the third inning. A Richardson single scored McClure in the fourth inning to give Huntingdon a 3-2 lead. Salem (3-7, 0-2 GSAC) tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning, before Huntingdon answered in the seventh.

Huntingdon returns to action at Agnes Scott on Wednesday.
