Huntingdon softball takes two games from Millsaps

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team swept Millsaps 5-4 and 7-5 on Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks led from the start in Game 1 and scored six runs in the sixth inning to take control of Game 2. With the two wins, Huntingdon (5-7) has won five of its last six games.

Melissa McClure earned the win in Game 1, striking out five, walking three, allowing four runs and scattering nine hits in seven innings. Brooke Meadows picked up the second win, striking out seven, walking three, allowing 10 hits and five runs in seven innings.

Brittany Richardson, Ashlee Zachmeyer and Kaetlen Brown led Huntingdon at the plate in the first game. Richardson was 2-for-3 with two runs, Zachmeyer was 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI and Brown was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run, including a two-run home run.

Brown drove in three of the Lady Hawks' first four runs with a sacrifice bunt in the first inning and the two-run homer in the third. A Zachmeyer double brought in the second run of the game. Lauren Welch scored Huntingdon's final run on an error in the fourth inning.

Leading 5-4 with runners on second and third and two outs in the top of the seventh, McClure forced a pop fly to end Game 1.

In Game 2, Ashley Johnson was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3. Jenna Rimensnyder had two RBIs and Welch scored twice.

Through five innings, Huntingdon trailed 2-1 with its only run coming on a Justice Fuller single. But the Lady Hawks took the lead in the sixth inning.

A Holly Ostrander double scored Gabby Alcantar to tie the game and an Ashley Hawkins bunt scored McClure for a 3-2 lead. A Welch double brought Ostrander home before Rimensnyder doubled to score Welch and Alicia Gauker. Rimensnyder scored on a Johnson single to make it 7-2.

Millsaps (8-7) scored three runs in the top of the seventh before Meadows forced a pop fly and struck out the final two batters.

Huntingdon plays at LaGrange on Thursday in a doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 4 p.m.
