Huntingdon softball claims regular-season GSAC title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Lauren Welch hit a grand slam in Game 1 and Brittany Richardson ended Huntingdon's 7-3 and 11-3 sweep of Agnes Scott with a solo home run in Game 2.

The Lady Hawks (21-9, 14-0 Great South Athletic Conference) locked up the regular-season conference title with the wins. Huntingdon, which has won 18 straight conference games and 32 of its last 33 conference games, will close out the regular season on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Salem.

Huntingdon totaled 23 hits in Wednesday's doubleheader. The Lady Hawks used a six-run fifth inning to take control of Game 1 and scored in every inning in Game 2.

Welch finished with five RBIs and two runs in the doubleheader. Her grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Huntingdon a 6-0 lead in the first game. Richardson was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and two runs. With the Lady Hawks leading 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Richardson hit her sixth home run of the season to force the eight-run mercy rule and end Game 2.

In Game 1, Melissa McClure scored twice and Gabby Alcantar, Jade Reynolds, Jenna Rimensnyder and Ashley Johnson each scored once. Justice Fuller drove in Huntingdon's first run.

In Game 2, Richardson was 3-for-4 and freshman Halleigh DiNicholas was 3-for-3. DiNicholas finished the day 4-for-6 with two runs in the two games. Chasity Ward had two RBIs in the second game.

Rimensnyder scored two runs and Alcantar, Welch, Reynolds and Johnson each had one RBI and one run. Kaetlen Brown had one RBI and Kari Ranczka scored one run.

McClure (12-3) was the winning pitcher in Game 1, striking out four and scattering eight hits in seven innings. Brooke Meadows (6-5) earned the win in Game 2, striking out five and allowing five hits in five innings.
