Huntingdon softball loses to Finlandia in GSAC finals

CLEMMONS, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball season came to an end with two losses to Finlandia University on the final day of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament.

The Lady Hawks lost to Finlandia 8-6 Saturday morning before bouncing back to beat Agnes Scott 4-0. The win over the Scotties set up a rematch with Finlandia in the championship game. Finlandia won the championship game 5-0.

Huntingdon (25-11) committed three errors that led to four unearned runs in the championship game. Brittany Richardson had the Lady Hawks' only hit in the game. Melissa McClure (14-5) took the loss, striking out four, scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run in 4 2/3 innings.

In the first game with Finlandia, Huntingdon built a 4-0 lead early, gave up five runs in the third inning but led 6-5 entering the sixth inning. Finlandia scored three runs in the final two innings to get the win.

McClure struck out five, walked three, allowed seven hits and three runs to take the loss in 4 2/3 innings of relief of starter Brooke Meadows.

Gabby Alcantar had two hits, three RBIs and a run and Richardson had two hits and two runs. Lauren Welch, Halleigh DiNicholas and Justice Fuller each had one RBI. Fuller also scored a run, as did Kari Ranczka and Holly Ostrander.

In the win over Agnes Scott, Jenna Rimensnyder was 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Richardson and Ashley Johnson each had a RBI and a run and Welch had one RBI. Meadows (8-5) picked up the win, striking out 12 and allowing four hits.
