Huntingdon softball splits with Berry

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior Katy Messick scattered six hits, struck out three and walked one to help the Huntingdon softball team salvage a split with Berry College on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks dropped their first game 15-3 in five innings before taking the second game 3-1. Messick (1-0) picked up the win in seven innings and was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Huntingdon scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead in Game 2. Kala Rooney singled to score Ashlee Zachmeyer for the first run and Daisha Henderson singled to score Blake Rowland. Messick scored in the third inning on a Morgan Goshorn single.

Along with Messick, Rowland and Rooney each had two hits in the second game.

In Game 1, Huntingdon (4-3) committed six errors, gave up 15 hits and 10 unearned runs. Berry (6-2) scored seven runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fourth inning.

Huntingdon scored two runs in the second inning as Holly Ostrander scored on a Tiffany Taylor ground out and Heather McGuirk scored on an Amy Caroline Riley ground out. Goshorn doubled in the fifth inning to score Ashley Johnson for the Lady Hawks' third run.

Brooke Meadows (2-2) took the loss in 1.1 innings and Anna Stephens pitched 3.2 innings of relief.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Thursday. The Lady Hawks host Spring Hill, the second ranked team in NAIA, in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
