Huntingdon softball picks up fourth USA South sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team used offense in Game 1 and defense in Game 2 to sweep Greensboro 12-11 and 3-1 on Saturday in a conference doubleheader.

Sparked by six runs in the fifth inning, Huntingdon (14-9, 10-2 USA South) rallied from a five-run deficit in the first game. In Game 2, the Lady Hawks scored three runs in the fourth inning for the difference.

This was the fourth sweep in six USA South Athletic Conference doubleheaders this season.

Brooke Meadows (6-3) picked up the win in Game 2, striking out 13, walking one and allowing four hits and one earned run in seven innings. Kaitlynn Wiggins (2-2) earned the first win in four innings of relief.

Holly Ostrander and Heather McGuirk led Huntingdon at the plate in the two games. Ostrander finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs and a RBI and McGuirk was 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs.

Trailing 9-4 in Game 1, Huntingdon batted around in the fifth inning. A two-run home run by Morgan Goshorn highlighted the inning as Huntingdon took a 10-9 lead. The Lady Hawks added two runs in the sixth and held off the Pride (11-11, 4-4 USA South) in the bottom of the seventh.

McGuirk was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, Ostrander was 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs and Halleigh DiNicholas was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Ashlee Zachmeyer drove in two runs, Lauren Welch scored two runs, Ashley Johnson had two hits and Gabby Alcantar, Jenna Rimensnyder and Daisha Henderson each scored once.

In Game 2, Ostrander and McGuirk both scored on an error in the third inning and Jamie Langford scored on a sacrifice fly by Welch. During the final four innings, Meadows struck out at least two batters in each inning.

Huntingdon plays at Averett in a conference doubleheader on Sunday.
