Goshorn named USA South Softball Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon junior Morgan Goshorn had a dominant week at the plate to earn USA South Softball Player of the Week.

Goshorn accounted for seven of Huntingdon's 20 RBIs, hit two home runs, batted .667 (6-for-9) and had a 1.556 slugging percentage in three games last week. Goshorn was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBIs in a 7-2 win over LaGrange, was 1-for-2 with a RBI double in a 1-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan and was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a three-run homer, in a 6-2 win over N.C. Wesleyan.

For the season, Goshorn leads the Lady Hawks with four home runs, is tied for the team lead with eight doubles and is second on the team with 18 RBIs.

Baseball Player of the Week
Jason Carter, Averett - The senior infielder from Chesapeake, Virginia went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with six runs scored, two RBI, three doubles and one walk as the Cougars earned a 3-1 record last week. In a 5-3 victory over USA South foe Ferrum, Carter was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one double. In a 12-5 win over Guilford, Carter was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and one double. Finally, in a doubleheader split with USA South rival Huntingdon, Carter was a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored, one double and one walk. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Garrett Kriston, Covenant - The Trinity, Florida sophomore earned a complete-game victory in his only appearance on the mound last week, a 3-1 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Kriston went the distance while allowing just one run on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts to earn the victory. Morgan Goshorn, Huntingdon -The junior designated player from Crestview, Florida went a combined 6-for-9 (.667) with seven RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and two home runs as the Hawks posted a 4-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of LaGrange, Goshorn appeared in game-two and was 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run scored and one double. In a doubleheader sweep of N.C. Wesleyan, Goshorn was a combined 3-for-5 with four RBI, one run scored, one double and one home run. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Brittany Head, Piedmont - The Cumming, Georgia senior appeared in three games last week, all starts, and earned a 3-0 record over USA South competition by tossing a total of 20.0 shutout innings, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits with zero walks and 18 strikeouts. In an 8-0, six-inning, win over Covenant, Head went the distance and allowed just one hit with 11 strikeouts. In a 5-1 victory over Averett, Head again pitched a complete-game and allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Finally, in a 6-1 complete-game win over Greensboro, Head allowed one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts. Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Mikhail Konnov, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Yaroslav, Russia earned a 2-0 record at the number-one singles spot and 1-0 mark at the top doubles position last week. In singles, Konnov earned wins over opponents from USA South foes Huntingdon and LaGrange. In doubles, Konnov teamed with Peter Hviid to collect a victory over Huntingdon. Also Nominated: Duncan Miller, Methodist; Trey Martin, Piedmont; Bobby Foroughian, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Katie Sailors, Piedmont - The senior from St. Mary's, Georgia earned a 4-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week over USA South competition. Sailors earned singles wins over opponents from Greensboro, Averett, Huntingdon and Covenant. In doubles action, Sailors teamed with Ashley Fannon to collect the four victories. Lane Deaver, Ferrum - The freshman outfielder from Yorktown, Virginia went a combined 9-for-13 (.692) with four runs scored, three RBI, one double, one triple and one home run as the Panthers posted a 1-4 record last week. In a 5-3 loss to USA South rival Averett, Deaver was a perfect 2-for-2 with one run scored and one run batted in on a solo home run. In a 10-6 loss to Roanoke, Deaver was 1-for-2 with one run scored, one run batted in and one triple. Finally, in three game series versus USA South foe Covenant, Deaver was a combined 6-for-9 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one double. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Joe Jones, Maryville - The Cookeville, Tennessee freshman earned a 1-0 record in two relief appearances last week for the Scots. Jones totaled nine innings pitched and allowed one run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts last week. In a 13-8 loss to Roanoke, Jones tossed 4.1 innings of relief and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout to record a no-decision. In a 5-4 victory over USA South foe Greensboro, Jones pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief and allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout to earn the win. Jordan Brett, Covenant - The freshman third baseman from Swainsboro, Georgia went a combined 13-for-19 (.684) with nine runs scored, eight RBI, four doubles, three home runs and two walks as the Scots posted a 1-5 record last week versus USA South competition. In two losses to Piedmont, Brett was a combined 4-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored, one double and one home run. In two losses to Averett, Brett was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBI, one double and one walk. Finally, in a doubleheader split with Mary Baldwin, Brett was a combined 6-for-8 with six runs scored, four RBI, two doubles, two home runs and one walk. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Amanda Roberts, Ferrum - The Lawrenceville, Virginia freshman earned a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week in four appearances, three starts, for the Panthers. Roberts totaled 18.2 innings pitched and allowed ten runs, five of which were earned, on 20 hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts. In a doubleheader split with Methodist, Roberts earned a game-two complete-game victory by allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Roberts' other victory came in a 7-0 win over Maryville as she tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Emily Hester, Methodist.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Matthew Metzger, Piedmont - The freshman from Auckland, New Zealand earned a 3-1 record at the number-one singles and doubles positions last week. In singles, Metzger earned wins over opponents from USA South foes Greensboro, Averett and Covenant. In doubles, Metzger teamed with Mason Riza to collect the three victories. Also Nominated: John Dangerfield, Methodist; Elias Kerem, N.C. Wesleyan; Nicolas Quevedo, Averett.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Abigail Randolph, Methodist - The freshman from Richmond, Virginia earned a 3-0 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark last week for the Monarchs. Randolph earned a 2-0 record at number-two singles with wins over USA South foes Ferrum and LaGrange before collecting a win at number-one singles over Point. In doubles, Randolph collected at win at the top doubles position with Laura Baker over Ferrum then earned a win over LaGrange with Emily Talley at the number-two doubles position.
