Huntingdon softball pushes winning streak to six games

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team pushed its winning streak to six games with a 6-1 and 13-9 sweep of Agnes Scott on Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks have swept three doubleheaders in three days to even their season record at 9-9.

Huntingdon had a season-high 17 hits and 12 RBIs in Game 2 on Tuesday as six players recorded multiple hits. Leadoff batter Daisha Henderson finished the doubleheader 7-for-9 with three runs, a RBI and three stolen bases. In the past six games, the sophomore is 15-for-22 with nine runs, two RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Henderson was 4-for-4 with a run and a RBI in Game 1 against Agnes Scott. With Huntingdon trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Henderson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Huntingdon took the lead for good one play later as Lindsey Selph singled to score Gabby Alcantar.

In the fifth inning, Ashley Johnson and Alicia Gauker both scored on a two-run single by Heather McGuirk to make it 4-1. Tiffany Taylor and Blake Rowland scored the Lady Hawks' final two runs in the sixth inning.

Katy Messick (5-4) pitched a complete game to earn the win. Messick struck out nine, walked one, scattered six hits and allowed one unearned run.

Anna Stephens (1-1) pitched 3 1/3 innings in Game 2 to pick up the win in relief.

Trailing 3-1 after the first inning of Game 2, Huntingdon scored nine runs in three innings to take control. Leading 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth, Taylor drove in one run and Rowland drove in two runs to put Huntingdon ahead by five runs.

Henderson, Kala Rooney and Ashley Johnson each had three hits in the second game. Johnson had three RBIs and two runs, Rooney had two RBIs and a run and Henderson scored twice.

Rowland finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs, Alcantar had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Taylor had two hits, two runs and a RBI. McGuirk and Jamie Langford each had a RBI and a run and Selph scored one run.

Huntingdon returns to action on Saturday at Maryville at 11 a.m.
