Lady Hawks sweep Greensboro in conference doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team earned its third conference sweep of the season on Saturday.

Huntingdon knocked off Greensboro 4-3 in eight innings in Game 1 and won 8-6 in Game 2. The Lady Hawks (12-10, 7-5 USA South) have won nine of their last 10 games.

Senior Katy Messick drove in the winning run in Game 1 with a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Kala Rooney in the bottom of the eighth inning. In Game 2, Huntingdon scored eight runs in the first three innings and held off a late push by Greensboro (11-13, 4-6 USA South). The Pride had the bases loaded when Huntingdon forced the final out in the seventh inning.

Freshman Lindsey Selph hit two home runs in the doubleheader and finished 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs. Selph and senior Heather McGuirk each had two hits in Game 1.

Selph drove in Huntingdon's first two runs in Game 1 with a solo home run in the second inning and a ground out that scored senior Gabby Alcantar in the third inning. McGuirk scored on an error in the third inning to give the Lady Hawks a 3-0 lead. Greensboro rallied and tied the game in the seventh inning to force extra innings.

Messick (7-4) earned the win in eight innings.

In Game 2, senior Ashley Johnson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, Selph hit a solo home run and freshman Chelsea Messer scored two runs. Sophomore Daisha Henderson had a RBI and a run, Alcantar drove in one run and senior Tiffany Taylor, sophomore Jamie Langford and Rooney each scored one run.

Selph (3-3) picked up the win in 6 1/3 innings and senior Anna Stephens recorded the save in 2/3 of an inning.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Sunday, hosting 21st-ranked Averett. Game 1 of the conference doubleheader is set for noon.
