Lady Hawks take two from Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team earned a pair of conference victories with a 2-0 and 12-7 sweep of Covenant on Friday.

The Lady Hawks scored two runs in the first inning of Game 1 and made the lead last. In Game 2, Huntingdon scored eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take control.

Seniors Gabby Alcantar and Heather McGuirk each had three hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. Alcantar scored three runs and McGuirk scored one run.

In Game 1, Alcantar tripled to score Daisha Henderson and later scored on a Tiffany Taylor sacrifice fly to give Huntingdon a 2-0 lead.

Katy Messick (8-5) pitched a complete-game shutout for the win. Messick struck out seven, walked six and scattered seven hits in seven innings.

In Game 2, Huntingdon (14-11, 9-6 USA South) trailed 4-3 in the fourth inning before scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run double by Alcantar put Huntingdon in front and a two-run double by McGuirk added to the lead. McGuirk scored the final run of the inning on an error.

Blake Rowland, Jamie Langford and Alicia Gauker each had a RBI and a run in Game 2. Gauker also had two hits. Taylor and Ashley Johnson each scored two runs and Henderson and Kala Rooney each scored one run.

Anna Stephens (2-1) picked up the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Huntingdon plays at Piedmont on Saturday in a conference doubleheader. Game 1 is set for noon.
